Eagar challenges Lee after his debate no-show

Lonsberry and callers express displeasure.

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, March 5, 2010.  Yesterday morning should've been a banner day for the Eagar or Lee senate campaigns, with one camp boasting of a clear victory in a one-on-one debate on KNRS talk radio.  This much-anticipated clash of titans, to be hosted by Bob Lonsberry, was cancelled when Mike Lee withdrew without explanation.

Lee and Eagar were invited to debate on Utah's top conservative talk radio show, a challenge readily accepted by both.  Eagar went so far as to accommodate Lee’s schedule for March 4 during the 8:00 a.m. segment.  On Tuesday, March 2, Lee had a sudden attack of the vapors and backed out.

Eagar and Lee are the challengers most often given the best chance to unseat 3-term incumbent Bob Bennett.  Neither, however, is yet viewed as certain to win, so this face-to-face was a key moment: With hundreds of political junkies listening, it was a perfect chance for one to draw supporters away from the other and to win still-undecided voters.

In announcing the event-that-wasn't, Lonsberry said, "I thought these two, head to head, side by side, would be useful."  Lonsberry, like Eagar, accommodated Lee's choice of date.  "And, then . . . the Mike Lee campaign withdrew.  Why withdraw?  Well, not really any answer.   And, one answer that was given may have been for an event that, actually, upon verification, wasn't taking place.  So, he just decided not to come.  And, you know, so, we said to Mrs. Eagar, 'The other guy backed out'."  Stating that he is not a fan of either contender, Lonsberry added, "I'm typically not impressed by a fellow who runs away from a fight, and I find, typically, the fellow who says, 'I don't want to fight,' is not the one who would've won the fight.  You know what I mean?"  He also made a point of Lee's refusal to reschedule.

"If Mike Lee was serious about winning this election," said one caller, "he'd want every opportunity to get his message out . . . If he was unprepared, he shouldn't be running."

Another caller wondered if Lee was like the "high school kid who trained for wrestling, gets down on the mat, looks up and realizes he has to wrestle a girl . . . 'Now, what?  What if she beats me?' . . . instead of getting out there and fighting a good fight and doing the best he can, whether she wins or loses, he knows he fought the best fight.  Why not try?  He doesn't want to try, he just kinda' gives up."

It is apparent that the Lee campaign does not want a live debate in a public forum such as the Bob Lonsberry Show.  What is Mr. Lee hiding?  Why pull out of a wonderful opportunity for the voters to hear him and see what his supporters have been raving about?

Cherilyn Eagar's challenge to Mike Lee remains open.  She is ready to debate Lee live on Lonsberry's show.  "I ask Mr. Lee to join me," she said, "to stand up like a man and debate me."

Eagar Endorsed by Glenn Kimber of the Thomas Jefferson Center

Cleon Skousen was a pivotal figure in Cherilyn Eagar's life,
his son-in-law now endorses her candidacy.

As a child, I remember Cleon Skousen, author of The 5,000 Year Leap. He stayed in our home in Hollywood, California, to give presentations on two of his earlier works, The Naked Communist and The Naked Capitalist, and a review of Carroll Quigley's book Tragedy and Hope.

Skousen was pivotal in helping me frame my views of the Founders and the Constitution and I used his later books, such as The 5,000 Year Leap, to train my children in the founding of America.

Cleon Skousen has passed on, but I'm pleased to announce that his son-in-law, Glenn Kimber, has endorsed our campaign for the U.S. Senate. Dr. Kimber is president and founder of The Thomas Jefferson Center for Constitutional Studies. Here is an excerpt from his endorsement article (full text here):

"Elections that are based upon emotions rather than righteous principles will lead to the evils that all Americans should shun and fight against.

"As Americans, we must stop going to the polls to pool our mutual ignorance. We must become informed about our Constitution. We must remind ourselves of Benjamin Franklin's wise council when he said, 'if we shall be divided by our little partial, local interests, our projects will be confounded and we ourselves shall become a reproach and a byword down to future ages.'

"So in conclusion, let us consider 'What is right and what is left.' All of us need to study the inspired Founders and what they stood for. Then, we can use their Constitutional principles as the standard and measurement for those who wish to be our elected officials. Our nation’s motto, In God We Trust, can only take effect if God can trust in us.

"I have looked quite closely and with great interest, at those running for the U.S. Senate here in Utah. . . . In so doing I have determined that, in my opinion, at this time, the candidate who is closest to the Founders’ philosophy is Cherilyn Eagar."

Glenn Kimber, The Thomas Jefferson Center

Utah Republican Assembly Endorses Eagar

URA Endorsement on Saturday

OREM, UTAH, February 20, 2010. The Utah Republican Assembly voted to endorse Cherilyn Eagar to replace Senator Bob Bennett at its endorsing convention. Cherilyn Eagar, touting her 30-year record fighting for the Constitution and conservative causes, beat all 4 of her challengers with 64% in the 3rd and final ballot to win the endorsement of the Assembly. Other federal candidates endorsed by the URA include Governor Herbert and Morgan Philpot of the Second District.

In stating the differences between herself and the others running, Cherilyn said, “I have no conflicts of interest with any corporation, foreign or domestic…I want to go to Washington and put an end to the back-room deals at the heart of the corruption.”

The URA endorsement process is very similar to Utah GOP Convention multiple ballot process. Each candidate was given 10 minutes to speak followed by up to 3 rounds of voting. Eagar narrowly missed gaining the super majority of 60% in the first round with 55%. Her nearest opponent only received 32%.

"Cherilyn is the only candidate that has a 30 year track record of consistent conservatism and family values that I can trust," said URA Member, Dale Herring, Provo, Utah. "She won't waffle under pressure!"

Phoenix Roberts of Salt Lake City said, "I am happy to put my name, time and reputation on the line for Cherilyn. She has earned this endorsement."

Comprised of traditional Republicans, the NFRA of which the Utah Republican Assembly (URA) is a part, is an independent grassroots organization, dedicated to working within the framework of the Republican Party, to promote the active participation of our members toward the endorsement, support, and election of principled Republican candidates.

The NFRA is an outgrowth of the very successful California Republican Assembly. President Ronald Reagan considered it to be “The Conscience of the Republican Party” ©. Founded in 1934, and dedicated to preserving the American way of life, it is our nation’s oldest and largest conservative Republican grassroots volunteer organization.

Eagar Joins Campaign to Take Back Medicine

Senate candidate is in the thick of a national fight against socialized healthcare

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, January 26, 2010. Cherilyn Eagar is leading a national campaign to against nationalized health care called "Operation 2010: Take Back Medicine." On Wednesday, January 27, 2010, at noon Mountain Time, she will host the first of two health care webinars called "Patient Power: Take Back Medicine NOW!" The second webinar is scheduled for Tuesday, February 2, 2010, at 7:00 p.m. especially for doctors called "How Doctors Can Protect Their Profession from a Hostile Government Takeover." The webinars will feature representatives and doctors from the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, a nationwide group representing medical professionals who oppose nationalized health care. Concerned citizens from all across the nation are invited to join these FREE Town Hall Webinars to learn about a national strategy to take this legislation down.

With the election of Scott Brown (R-MA) as Massachusetts' new senator, the Democrat's 60-vote majority has evaporated, and passage of their socialized medicine bill is in jeopardy. Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has admitted she doesn't have the votes to pass that bill in the House of Representatives. Eagar explains her reservation, "Brown was that critical number 41, but his post-campaign comments sounded more like BennettCare, another version of government managed health care. Ninety-nine percent of Republicans most likely to vote in Utah do not even believe that health care is a Constitutional right. We will watch what happens. One thing we know: This battle is not over, and it is winnable. Freedom-loving Americans now stand in a position of strength - and we must work together to defeat any form of nationalized health care." Details on the Webinar and links to join:

Wednesday, January 27, 2010, from noon to 1:00 p.m. (Mountain Time)

For healthcare users, the "Patient Power: Take Back Medicine Now!" webinar will be held on January 27. The featured presenter will be Kathryn Serkes, Director of Policy and Public Affairs for the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS),* an organization fighting to stop the Democratic Party's healthcare legislation. She will share the strategy around which Americans must unite.

For healthcare professionals, and anyone else who wants to listen in, a webinar entitled, "How Doctors Can Protect Their Profession from a Hostile Government Takeover" will be held on February 2. In addition to Kathryn Serkes, this webinar will feature Juliette Madrigal-Dersch, M.D., of Marble Falls, Texas, and George Watson, D.O., of Wichita, Kansas. Ms. Serkes will share what you can do as a doctor to protect your profession from nationalized health care. She'll be joined by two physicians with a patient-doctor direct practice model: Dr. Madrigal-Dersch and Dr. Watson work directly for their patients, not for third parties like insurance companies and government programs.

Eagar For Senate fundraiser features a visit by the First Lady of Conservatism

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, January 13, 2010.  Phyllis Schlafly, founder of the National Eagle Forum and first lady of the conservative movement, is coming to Salt Lake on Saturday, January 16.  She will address the Utah Eagle Forum's annual convention and be the guest of senate candidate Cherilyn Eagar at a private reception that evening.  Mrs. Schlafly's Eagle Forum was the first national organization to endorse Eagar's senate run against Sen. Bob Bennett.

Eagar says, "Because of Phyllis’ leadership, thousands of women rallied to protect women and the traditional family from a federal power grab.  Phyllis has been a role model for me throughout my life, and I’m honored to have her endorsement.  The Eagle Forum -- nationally and in this state -- has been a leader in conservative issues over the years.  I deeply admire the strength, courage and class of this lady, who has done more to protect women, children and the family than any other woman in my lifetime.  At age 85, she’s still going strong as ever."

Mrs. Schlafly first came to national prominence in the 1970s by fighting the Equal Rights Amendment.  She formed the National Eagle Forum to lead the pro-family movement, publishes The Phyllis Schlafly Report and remains a popular lecturer.  One of the "ground troops" in the ERA battle was Cherilyn Eagar, then just starting her fight for conservative principles, which continues today.  The two have been close friends ever since.

The reception will be held at the Rhodes Bake-n-Serv corporate headquarters, 5121 Murray Blvd., Murray, from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m.  Mrs. Schlafly will speak briefly to the group before attending a dinner at the Eagle Forum Convention.  The suggested minimum donation for those who'd like to meet Cherilyn Eagar and Mrs. Schlafly is $100.

The Eagle Forum Convention opens at the Larry H. Miller Campus of Salt Lake Community College in Sandy at 9:00 a.m. and runs until 9:00 p.m.  Representatives Rob Bishop and Jason Chaffetz, State Senator Chris Buttars, State Representative Brad Daw and members of the Patrick Henry Caucus will speak.  At 2:30 p.m., the U.S. Senate candidates will answer questions from the audience.
