New poll confirms most in Utah do not want Italian nuclear waste

Senate candidate Cherilyn Eagar opposes imported n-waste

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, February 3, 2010.  Since the debate on importation of nuclear waste began, Cherilyn Eagar has stood absolutely against it.  In a poll published yesterday by The Salt Lake Tribune, an "[o]verwhelming majority says Utah is not the right place for depleted uranium and foreign radioactive waste."  The Tribune article did not state the specific poll results, but they were as clear as the opinions of the candidates in this year's U.S. Senate race:

Eagar, the front-running challenger, says, "I'm speaking not only as a candidate, but as a mother of five and grandmother of ten.  Utah should not be the dumping ground for nuclear waste that becomes more radioactive over time, nor for foreign nuclear waste when we have limited waste storage capacity.  If it's not safe for Italy or South Carolina, it's not safe for Utah.  Didn't we learn our lesson with the Downwinders?  I don't care how 'safe' we're told it is, nuclear waste needs to be stored deep inside a mountain somewhere far away from civilization."

Senator Bennett, on the other hand, supports EnergySolutions (ES).  On December 1, 2009, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the "RID Act," which would ban the importation of nuclear waste from foreign countries.  Two days later, Bennett stalled the legislation in the Senate, effectively killing it by preventing it from coming to the floor for debate or vote.  In a written statement, Bennett said, "I believe the legislation is premature."  The RID Act remains stalled in limbo.

Announcing his entry into the race last month, Mike Lee spoke about EnergySolutions, who wants to import more than 16,000 tons of radioactive waste into Utah:  "The Constitution stands firmly on their side in that case," he said, adding he might support legislation to limit importation, but not prohibit it.  Lee also said, "I don't want Utah to be the world's radioactive waste dumping ground any more than anybody else does."  However, within days, he was standing before the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals, urging three judges to uphold a federal district court ruling that allows ES to accept foreign waste.

Lee's law firm is representing EnergySolutions, and Bennett has received nearly $50,000 in campaign donations from EnergySolutions and its employees, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, which says Utah's junior senator has accepted more donations from the nuclear waste industry than any candidate in the nation.

EnergySolutions contacted Eagar, inviting her to tour their facility.  While there, she clarified she would not be able to accept special interest money.  She says, "I'm asking Bob Bennett and Mike Lee to remove their conflicts of interest.  I invite them to join the fight to outlaw foreign waste coming into the United States."

Eagar adds, "The Constitution gives Congress the power to regulate interstate and international trade.  Almost 20 years ago, Congress delegated some of that authority to eight western states through the North West Interstate Compact.  Congress and NWIC made nuclear waste storage a states' rights issue, and the State of Utah says no!  It's time EnergySolutions, Mike Lee and Bob Bennett got the message."

Eagar Joins Campaign to Take Back Medicine

Senate candidate is in the thick of a national fight against socialized healthcare

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, January 26, 2010.  Cherilyn Eagar is leading a national campaign to against nationalized health care called "Operation 2010:  Take Back Medicine."  On Wednesday, January 27, 2010, at noon Mountain Time, she will host the first of two health care webinars called "Patient Power:  Take Back Medicine NOW!"  The second webinar is scheduled for Tuesday, February 2, 2010, at 7:00 p.m. especially for doctors called "How Doctors Can Protect Their Profession from a Hostile Government Takeover." The webinars will feature representatives and doctors from the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, a nationwide group representing medical professionals who oppose nationalized health care.  Concerned citizens from all across the nation are invited to join these FREE Town Hall Webinars to learn about a national strategy to take this legislation down.

With the election of Scott Brown (R-MA) as Massachusetts' new senator, the Democrat's 60-vote majority has evaporated, and passage of their socialized medicine bill is in jeopardy.  Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has admitted she doesn't have the votes to pass that bill in the House of Representatives.  Eagar explains her reservation, "Brown was that critical number 41, but his post-campaign comments sounded more like BennettCare, another version of government managed health care.  Ninety-nine percent of Republicans most likely to vote in Utah do not even believe that health care is a Constitutional right.  We will watch what happens.  One thing we know:  This battle is not over, and it is winnable.  Freedom-loving Americans now stand in a position of strength - and we must work together to defeat any form of nationalized health care." Eagar For Senate fundraiser features a visit by the First Lady of Conservatism

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, January 13, 2010.  Phyllis Schlafly, founder of the National Eagle Forum and first lady of the conservative movement, is coming to Salt Lake on Saturday, January 16.  She will address the Utah Eagle Forum's annual convention and be the guest of senate candidate Cherilyn Eagar at a private reception that evening.  Mrs. Schlafly's Eagle Forum was the first national organization to endorse Eagar's senate run against Sen. Bob Bennett.

Eagar says, "Because of Phyllis’ leadership, thousands of women rallied to protect women and the traditional family from a federal power grab.  Phyllis has been a role model for me throughout my life, and I’m honored to have her endorsement.  The Eagle Forum -- nationally and in this state -- has been a leader in conservative issues over the years.  I deeply admire the strength, courage and class of this lady, who has done more to protect women, children and the family than any other woman in my lifetime.  At age 85, she’s still going strong as ever."

Mrs. Schlafly first came to national prominence in the 1970s by fighting the Equal Rights Amendment.  She formed the National Eagle Forum to lead the pro-family movement, publishes The Phyllis Schlafly Report and remains a popular lecturer.  One of the "ground troops" in the ERA battle was Cherilyn Eagar, then just starting her fight for conservative principles, which continues today.  The two have been close friends ever since.

The reception will be held at the Rhodes Bake-n-Serv corporate headquarters, 5121 Murray Blvd., Murray, from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m.  Mrs. Schlafly will speak briefly to the group before attending a dinner at the Eagle Forum Convention.  The suggested minimum donation for those who'd like to meet Cherilyn Eagar and Mrs. Schlafly is $100.

The Eagle Forum Convention opens at the Larry H. Miller Campus of Salt Lake Community College in Sandy at 9:00 a.m. and runs until 9:00 p.m.  Representatives Rob Bishop and Jason Chaffetz, State Senator Chris Buttars, State Representative Brad Daw and members of the Patrick Henry Caucus will speak.  At 2:30 p.m., the U.S. Senate candidates will answer questions from the audience.

Utah senate race getting wide press coverage:

On January 8, blogger "Nacilbupera" (that's "A Republican" spelled backward) continued his coverage of the Utah Senate race, noting that Eagar Bests Lee II: Both Trump Bennett.

That same day, political website The Hill announced Club For Growth Will Oppose Bennett's Reelection.

A USA Today "On Politics" column in January also noted that Conservative Group Opposes Utah's Bennett, but forgot to mention the real leading contender -- Cherilyn Eagar.

US News and World Report didn't learn much from the House race in New York's 23rd District, but, back on November 20, they pointed out that several strong conservatives are succeeding. The magazine concludes "Faith-based challenges show a new rift in the GOP".

On November 14, the Los Angeles Times figured out there's an "anti-establishment anger that could affect both parties" when they talked about Utah's front in GOP civil war.
