About Cherilyn Eagar

Cherilyn Bacon Eagar is a candidate for Utah's U.S. Senate seat in 2010.  The Washington Post has named this race one of the top 10 in-party races in the nation to watch.  She is on leave of absence as Vice President of Marketing and co-owner of WebsTarget, a real estate Internet Marketing company specializing in organic search engine optimization and social networking, to give full-time to this campaign.
Cherilyn is not a career politician and, as with both Utah Senators, she has never served in political office prior to running for Senate.  Instead, she has prepared well for the role through decades of consistent strong work ethics and her support of principled values in the public square.  She has served her community for over 30 years in charitable, family advocacy and political activist roles.  With a lifetime of study and research, she is well-read on the issues.  She has researched extensively on education policy, has presented nationally on education reforms, media and public relations and related topics, and Internet marketing strategies.
On the International level, in 1978 she was a delegate to the United Nations International Women’s Year Conference.  In 2004, she advocated at the United Nations in support of traditional family values, assisting Constitutional scholar and law professor Richard Wilkins to raise money for the Defend Marriage Project.
She was asked to serve as a parent advisor to BYU’s Academic Freedom Committee, after she played a key role in the investigation and exposing of radical feminist and false LDS doctrine and pornographic masters’ theses approved under the supervision of faculty members who were dismissed.
She worked to pass marriage amendments in four states - Utah and California - and she traveled to Massachusetts and Ohio to assist with their petition and ballot measures.
On the national level, she initiated the founding of two family advocacy organizations, has fought pornography and raised money for legal research.  She secured over $400,000 in funding for these causes and helped raise $22,000 online for a legal defense fund to assist two families in Massachusetts whose children were not allowed to opt-out of homosexual indoctrination in the classroom.
She funded and provided research for the legal brief that virtually killed the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment and its big government agenda to remove protections that women once had.  Because of radical feminist goals, she predicted a new demographic of poverty – single women left vulnerable to no-fault divorce laws.
On the state level, in Utah, former UN Ambassador Jeanne Kirkpatrick recommended her appointment to the U.S. Civil Rights Commission, Utah Committee. She co-authored the first state Family Education Rights to Privacy Act which passed overwhelmingly.  She secured funding for legal research on a bill that restricted the activity of the Gay-Straight Alliance Clubs on school campuses.  She also assisted the Marriage Coalition during passage of Utah’s Amendment 3 and wrote and produced a TV spot featuring the Alan Osmond Family to off-set Attorney General Mark Shurtleff’s flawed constitutional and legal advice.  She is a member of the Family Coalition which successfully defeated the homosexual Common Ground Initiative.  She recently helped organize a new Utah States’ Rights Coalition.
On the local level, as a candidate for the school board in Richardson, Texas, she successfully led a grassroots effort to retain honors classes and to prohibit school-based health clinics, contraceptive distribution and condom demonstrations in classrooms.
Cherilyn has hosted a talk radio show and routinely subs on K-TALK radio in Salt Lake City.  She is a former teacher featured in Sean Hannity’s book Let Freedom Ring for successfully calling into question the American Red Cross’ “religious and political neutrality” policy. That policy prohibited her high school performing group from performing a repertoire of lyrics from The Declaration of Independence, “God Bless America” “Prayer of the Children” and “God Bless the USA” at a post-9/11 volunteer awards banquet.  She did what was right and risked her job by cancelling the performance.
With the endorsement of the students’ parents and the school, she sent out a news release landing appearances on radio/TV across the nation in recognition of her tenacity.  The Orange County Register invited her to meet its editorial board to thank her for giving them the lead story that garnered its highest readership/approval rating “in recent memory.”
Cherilyn has served in leadership roles in Republican Women’s organizations and on non-profit boards. As President of Utah California Women and board member for many years, she raised funds for Special Olympics Utah.  She currently serves on the Utah Federation of Republican Women Board.  She is/has been a county and state delegate multiple times and has worked on many campaigns – Nixon (CA governor), Reagan (CA governor/President), Goldwater, Buchanan, John Ashcroft’s presidential exploratory committee, Bush 2004 and Romney’s Utah Women for Mitt Committee.  She managed Tom Draschil’s campaign opposing Chris Cannon for Utah’s 3rd congressional district and helped train former Congresswoman Enid Greene’s GOTV team.
A lifelong Republican, she has also had brief, top-level, “third party” experience when she helped Patrick Buchanan in his bid for the Presidency.  During that time, she became the National Press Secretary for the Reform Party USA.  This experience developed her strong advocacy for working within the two-party system to affect change.  As GOP delegate she has influenced platforms in Texas, Utah, and Illinois. Eagar believes the Republican Party has drifted too far from its principles and from the original intent of the Constitution.  She recognizes that both parties have contributed to the national debt.  She says, “It’s time for Republicans to stand up and start acting like Republicans again!”
Born and raised in Hollywood, California in a politically active home,  she graduated from Cheremoya Avenue School, Marlborough School for Girls and Hollywood High School. She received her B.A. degree from Brigham Young University in Speech & Dramatic Arts, emphasis in debate and public address and served as Law Partners President, J. Reuben Clark Law School.
Her parents Dorothy and Samuel K. Bacon, MD helped Ronald Reagan get started in politics with a speech to the California Medical Association on Medicare – the dangers of socialized medicine.  She learned the value of hard work with her first job assisting her father in his medical practice.  As fiscal conservatives, she and her parents worked with Howard Jarvis during the Prop 13 tax revolt.
Cherilyn’s Utah values are deep with the legacy of her Martin Handcart Company ancestors. She has lived in Utah for 20 years.  Her extended family resides in Utah County where her brother Carl Bacon is a founder and Executive Producer of America’s Freedom Festival at Provo Stadium of Fire.
During the Viet Nam War, Cherilyn participated in a Department of Defense diplomatic mission, touring the Pacific and Caribbean Commands with the BYU Young Ambassadors, representing U.S. colleges.  She says, “I’ll never forget staying at Guantanamo Bay and peering through that fence that separates freedom from socialism.  It seems to me that we are strangely peering through that same fence right here in America.”
She developed and produced a summer workshop training program in New York City for aspiring performing artists which trade paper Backstage rated among top two programs along with NYU’s CAP 21 program. She received highest ratings while on the faculties at the prestigious Orange County School of the Arts and at Brigham Young University.  She has succeeded in highest levels of the performing arts, giving her a fearless and confident style.
Cherilyn has experienced the joys and sorrows and the successes and failures of life, as we all do.  She knows the struggle of being a single mom and has learned that out of adversity comes advantage and from opposition comes opportunity, optimism and strength.  She is married to Randy Eagar, President of WebsTarget and 2006 President of the National Association of Realtors’ Council of Residential Specialists. They were married in the Provo Temple by her brother Carl, and they have 7 grown children (Cherilyn’s five and Randy’s two) and 10 grandchildren.
Cherilyn is a life-long active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in ward leadership roles in all auxiliaries and with the children at the stake level.  She directed a special Youth Standards project on a Bi-Regional level in Dallas-Fort Worth that received mayoral, gubernatorial, and national recognition by the Reagan Administration.
